About us
Prabashi Portland is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating and preserving Bengali culture and traditions in the Greater Portland Area. Over the past 25 years, Prabashi has grown from a small, close-knit group into a thriving community that fosters a spirit of togetherness by promoting cultural diversity, community engagement, and philanthropic initiatives.
Prabashi is a fully volunteer-led organization, and we take immense pride in our inclusivity. Our local patrons continuously find meaningful ways to engage, contribute, and strengthen the fabric of our community. Through their dedication, Prabashi has been able to organize diverse events that resonate deeply with both long-time members and newcomers alike.
The organization hosts a variety of religious, cultural, and community events throughout the year, including:
✅ Durga Puja – Our flagship event and the most cherished festival for Bengalis, celebrating the triumph of good over evil. We mark this occasion with grandeur, bringing in renowned artists from India to recreate the authentic festive atmosphere and make our community feel connected to their roots.
✅ Saraswati Puja – Celebrating the Goddess of Knowledge through prayers, cultural performances, and community gatherings.
✅ Spring Carnival – Rang De Basanti – A pan-Indian dance festival paired with a multicultural food fair, bringing together flavors and rhythms from across India.
✅ Rabindra Nazrul Jayanti – Honoring the literary and musical contributions of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam with recitations, performances, and music.
Prabashi also organizes community sports events and philanthropic initiatives to engage and give back to the local Portland community, fostering inclusivity and cultural awareness.
